The Young Musicians Institute (YMI), led by a distinguished team of educators and musicians, is a free, full-day immersive experience for young string players ages 9 years old and up, with at least one year of study. Students will engage in a dynamic and creative day of music-making, under the guidance of Gateways Music Festival’s Director of Programs Armand Hall, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Assistant Conductor Jerrhard Hardeman, and teaching artists Joshua Henderson, Alexandria Hill, Jennifer Arnold, Angelique Montes, and Anthony Morris. 

Throughout the day, students will refine their technique, dive into the intersection of music and technology, and work on pieces they’ve prepared in advance. Along with plenty of breaks for food and fun, the heart of the day lies in collaboration: Students will join forces to compose their own music, exploring new ideas together and creating something truly original.

The day will culminate in a showcase performance on the stage of Eastman School of Music’s Kilbourn Hall, where the students and the teaching artists will present their collaborative compositions to an audience of family, friends, and invited community.
