Hatch Recital Hall, Eastman School of Music
26 Gibbs St, Rochester, NY 14604
This enlightening evening of film, discussion and performance centers the legacy of the Harlem Hellfighters, the renowned all-Black 369th infantry regiment of the New York Army National Guard during World War I, whose pioneering contributions extended beyond the battlefield and into the world of music. Led by legendary bandleader and composer James Reese Europe, the Hellfighters Band brought the sounds of jazz and ragtime to the frontlines of the war, forever changing the landscape of American music.
The evening begins with a screening of the powerful one-hour documentary The Harlem Hellfighters, which chronicles the bravery and sacrifice of the Black soldiers who served 191 days in front-line combat, fearlessly fighting the Germans longer than any other American regiment of WWI. Although not receiving recognition or respect upon their return to the United States, their fearless fighting earned them France’s highest military medal and the nickname “Harlem Hellfighters” by their terrified German enemies and their contributions to classical and popular music left a lasting, storied legacy.
Following the screening, a panel discussion will delve deeper into the Harlem Hellfighters’ musical legacy, featuring insights from Nobel Sissle Jr. (son of Famed composer and 369th Band member), Robin Roberts (via Zoom), and more special guests to be announced. Moderated by Gateways Brass Collective’s Isrea Butler, the conversation will explore how the Hellfighters’ music paved the way for Black musicians in classical and popular music, shaping cultural history in profound ways.
The event will conclude with a feature performance by the Gateways Brass Collective, recreating the vibrant sounds of the Harlem Hellfighters and honoring the band’s enduring influence on the world of music.
