The Young Musicians Institute’s Masterclass provides an opportunity for younger pre-professional musicians to work with Gateways’ professional musicians in a focused, one-on-one session in front of a live audience. Participating in a masterclass is an important part of a young musician’s musical development.

This masterclass features students from the Eastman School of Music’s Black Student Union. Students will perform traditional repertoire, orchestral excerpts, and technical exercises and then receive feedback. The masterclass will be open to an audience, allowing others to learn through the experience as well.

Moderated by Dr. Armand Hall, clinicians include Dr. Isrea Butler, trombone, Gateways Orchestra and Gateways Brass Collective and music department chair at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia; Andrew Francois, viola Gateways Orchestra and St. Louis Symphony Orchestra; and Geoffrey Johnson, oboe, Gateways Orchestra and formerly the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
